Happy New Year!

HNY2016Yes, its 2017, its January, its play month and  first night for A KICK IN THE BAUBLES is in 14 days! GulpEven if we say two weeks it still sounds scary as we recover from our festivities and seasonal ailments!

Its a case of picking up the momentum after the distraction of Christmas and New Year and so rehearsals have been intense over the last week and more.  In our cramped rehearsal room we are running scenes with sound effects and props and essential costume items all adding to the pressure.

Now, as we bring the whole play together to practice the full run throughs we also begin to plan our set building operations which start at the end of next week, Friday 20th.  And if you like a bit of DIY or even YDIIHI (You Do It, I’ll Hold It) then we always welcome help.

As we post this there are only 6 tickets left for Friday night, and the Thursday and Saturday are well filled too – so if you haven’t got your tickets yet don’t be disappointed, order them now by sending your request by clicking here:  Book Tickets

Xmas is (almost) upon us…

Still looking for that last minute Christmas present?  A value for money bargain? Something with a strong Christmas flavour? For your partner, friends, or just to treat yourself?

Ah, you guessed, didn’t you?  Yes it’s tickets for ‘A Kick In The Baubles’.    We know you are busy this week getting ready for that festive period just days away but if you have a moment it’s not a bad idea to book your tickets now.  Sales are going very well and we are ahead of our usual position with half of all seats already sold for every night – so if you want to get a good seat in your preferred rows then booking now is essential.

Meanwhile rehearsals have been continuing apace and we will fit in some work over the festive break to maintain momentum.  It’s now that our publicity starts to kick in.  We already have our posters ready for distribution and today we have been listed in the Hull City of Culture 2017 Events – click here to view our full listing.

Now it may be optimistic to think that we will get the same response as Richard Bean’s ‘The Hypocrite’ from it – or to crash the servers as with the ‘In With a Bang’ fireworks display – but you never know 😉

KITB 1: a production blog

As we begin twelve weeks of hard work for our next performance in January this seems a good opportunity to follow the process from the beginning of how we put on a play production with some regular (well, irregular) posts in this blog as we progress.  No, I don’t know what a blog is either but it sounds good.

Last Saturday we were performing our final night of ‘Spirit Level’ and six days later we have already had two rehearsals for the next. Now that is unusual but we need to get a Kick start to Kick In The Baubles – it’s a full-on comedy and we aim to be ambitious and we are asking our professional director to push us. Gareth Tudor Price is well known locally from his time at Hull Truck working with John Godber as Artistic Director.  He has been a long time supporter of our group and, his freelance production employment permitting,  has offered to produce this play with our own Janet Drewery.

When he heard that we were reading this play over the summer break and were considering it for our 2016/7 season he very kindly offered up his spare time to guide us in its production.  He had originally commissioned, produced and developed this play at Hull Truck and is keen to see what we can do with it. Having just finished his production of ‘Moby Dick’ in York, Gareth was keen to get some rehearsal miles under our belt.

Fresh from set-destruction the previous day, last Monday’s meeting had a pretty full attendance for a formal general meeting but then went straight into the first rehearsal night for KITB and….wow!  But more on that in our next post so if you haven’t already, sign up with your email to ensure you don’t miss a thing!

Spirit Level – photos now online

Once again our thanks to Dave Hacket who took our rehearsal photos of Spirit Level.  Pam Valentine’s warm and sentimental play turned out to be more successful than we anticipated with wonderful feedback from our very appreciative audiences – laughs, oohs, ahhhs, awws and some tears.

Our cast : from left,  Barbara Failey, Wyn Price, Nic Johnson, Tom Fryer, Gill Collins, Steve Howland, Sue Hart.

We love our traditional works but we are also pleased to be introducing these more recent works from established but less well known writers, certainly new to us.  We would highly recommended to other groups.
