COMING THIS NOVEMBER

Our next production rehearsals are already underway – but what’s it to be? Read on…

 Coming this November 13th, 14th, 15th 2025

THE CEMETERY CLUB   by Ivan Menchell

Ring a bell for some of you? We first performed this delightful comedy fourteen years ago when it was enjoyed by all and we decided that we would like to bring a new production of it to our current audiences (and also give the opportunity to those who enjoyed it the first time around to see it once again with a new cast.)

First performed on Broadway in the 1990s it remains timeless as a comedy about life and moving on.

What’s it about? Don’t be put off by a title with the word cemetery in it. This is not a morbid or depressing play, far from it. The Cemetery Club features pathos, comedy and some great, fast-paced, witty one-liners that will entertain you with a great night out.

In the area of Queens, New York, three Jewish widows and lifelong friends meet once a month for tea before going to visit their husbands’ graves.  Ida is sweet tempered and ready to begin a new life, Lucille is a feisty embodiment of the girl who just wants to have fun, and Doris is priggish and judgemental.  When Sam the butcher meets the widows whilst visiting his wife’s grave, relationships and routines begin to change…

And the good news is that you can book your seats now. Simply click here for details. For those of you who prefer to reserve your seats with a season ticket then your usual Newsletter is on its way – but if you can’t wait simply contact our ticket secretary Julie at any time.

What about the May play?

The May play will be a comedy by Richard Harris called

PARTY PIECE

Put it in your calendar – May 14th 15th 16th 2026

We’ll tell you more about it the next posts (or for a preview go to our What’s On page by clicking here )

A New Season Awaits

It’s getting to that time when we announce our new productions for 2025-2026 and we have been working through that process for some weeks.

WHAT DOES CHOOSING A PLAY INVOLVE?

The Petuaria Players pride themselves in striving to put on productions that are as professional as a small amateur group can achieve, an aim that many in our audiences will agree we often attain.

That is one of the criteria that informs us during our process of choosing plays but there are others that make the task surprisingly challenging.

We have a database of almost 200 plays that we have read, reviewed or performed over the years and in addition a limited number of us search out new productions that fit our criteria. That can be difficult, often working only on a synopsis and some reviews before deciding which ones to risk purchasing at around £12-£15 per script in order to read the full text (libraries are not what they were).

For the producers who carry out the selection task all the candidate plays need to be read, characters considered against our available actors and an assessment of whether the set can be constructed within our traditional stage area. A time consuming job.

But the selection process for candidate plays is complex – we need to try and hit a number of requirements;

CHOOSING SCRIPTS USUALLY INVOLVES TEARING YOUR HAIR OUT WITH FRUSTRATION

SOME OF THE SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Is the play any good? Upon examination many turn out to be inappropriate, unpopular, or just plain poor and weak.
  • Which actors are available for the play – if only one or two men or women are available then many plays are immediately ruled out.
  • Can the play characters be played convincingly by the available actors? Whilst age and gender can be stretched, especially in certain types of play, there is a limit.
  • What is the size of the role and the relative experience and ability of the actor in meeting it?
  • When we have a shortlist we need to apply for licenses and ensure there are no performance restrictions.
  • We always aim to ensure that those who wish to act on stage are cast in a play but this is not always possible when trying to achieve the above.
  • Apart from considering if the actors will like a play the producer / director must be committed to it too as they will be spending many hours over the next three months totally immersed in the entire script, it’s design and its direction at every rehearsal.

It’s a tearing-out-hair task that is a difficult balancing act involving compromises and a mix of excitement and disappointment for the members – hopefully more of the former if we get it right.

That is all behind the scenes. For our audiences all we hope you see is a yet another season of wonderful plays.

More news soon…

Memories

No, not the title of our next production. That’s something we are still working on during our summer recess. Watch this space for news on that particular subject – we normally expect to announce our new season sometime in August.

Meanwhile we hope you haven’t forgotten about us and are looking forward to seeing our mid-November production – whatever it will be. So we cannot tell you what the future holds but we can tell you about the past and remind you of the plays that have brought us to today.

2026 will be The Petuaria Players’ 65th anniversary and during that time we have presented almost 180 productions and lots of memories.

How many of these do you remember? How many of them have you seen? Let us know in the comments..

Sweet Delilah.. see the photos

Our enjoyable and much-loved run of The Sweet Delilah Swim Club ended on the 10th May which completes our 2024/25 season – aaaaaahhh! (a collective sigh all round after all the necessary intensive work required to put on a performance.)

We now embark upon our ‘summer break’ during which we meet up to read through scripts and start the process of selecting and casting our plays for the next November and May productions.

Meanwhile we can now share some photos taken during dress rehearsal that give you a flavour (and perhaps a few memories) of the show.

Putting on American plays, not least those based in the southern states, can be a challenge but we have done it successfully many times before and we achieved it again. Okay – whilst North Carolinians may not have been fooled – our local audience certainly were transported to a beach cottage on the Outer Banks for a few weekends through the decades with a great performance from our all-female cast. The audience loved their story, the humour and, of course, there were a few tears.

This was our second comedy from the Jones, Hope, Wooten writing team who are among the most popular and widely-produced playwrights in the US. They specialize in writing laugh-out-loud comedies and creating vivid strong roles for women and between them, they’ve written classic television, hit movies, and Off-Broadway comedy. It won’t surprise you that Jamie Wooten was a writer and producer for many seasons of the classic television series The Golden Girls.
